World Cup 2026 Stadium Protocols

Going to a World Cup match in Mexico is different from any other football experience. FIFA runs security, entry, and stadium operations to their own global standard — and it’s stricter than what you’d encounter at a Liga MX match or even a Champions League game. Here’s everything you need to know so you don’t get turned away at the gates.

The FIFA FAN ID — Non-Negotiable

The single most important thing to understand: No FIFA FAN ID = No entry. A valid match ticket alone is not enough.

What It Is

The FIFA FAN ID is a digital credential linked to your identity and ticket. It serves as:

  • Your entry pass to the stadium (alongside your match ticket)
  • Access to official FIFA Fan Zones
  • Free or discounted public transport on match days
  • Your identity verification throughout the tournament

How to Get It

  1. Purchase tickets through FIFA.com
  2. Register for your FAN ID at FIFA.com (you’ll be prompted after ticket purchase)
  3. Upload a passport-quality photo and personal details
  4. Receive your digital FAN ID via the FIFA app or email
  5. Have it ready on your phone or printed at the stadium

Important Notes

  • Registration opens after ticket purchase and can take 24-48 hours to process
  • Your FAN ID is linked to a specific match ticket — it’s not transferable
  • If you bought tickets through the FIFA Resale Platform, you’ll need to register a new FAN ID
  • International visitors: Your FAN ID may also serve as a simplified entry document for Mexico (details TBD by FIFA and Mexican immigration)

Prohibited Items

FIFA enforces strict rules on what you can bring into the stadium. Leave these at your hotel:

Absolutely Banned

  • Weapons of any kind (including pocket knives, multi-tools)
  • Glass bottles or containers
  • Cans
  • Drones
  • Professional cameras (lenses over 200mm)
  • Selfie sticks and monopods
  • Laser pointers
  • Fireworks, flares, or smoke devices
  • Large umbrellas
  • Political, offensive, or discriminatory banners
  • Musical instruments (except small percussion with prior FIFA approval)
  • Any commercial or promotional material

Bag Policy

  • Clear bags only — FIFA requires transparent bags or small clutch bags (max 20cm x 15cm x 5cm)
  • No backpacks, messenger bags, or large purses
  • Exceptions: medically necessary items (with documentation), baby bags (with infant present)
  • Best practice: Bring as little as possible. Phone, wallet, ticket, FAN ID. That’s it.

What You CAN Bring

  • Small clear bag or clutch
  • Mobile phone
  • Wallet and cash
  • Sunscreen (small, non-aerosol)
  • Sealed water bottle (small, plastic — may vary by venue)
  • Prescription medication (with documentation)
  • Flags (handheld, no poles)
  • Face paint
  • Hat and sunglasses

Match-Day Timeline

4-5 Hours Before Kickoff

  • Eat a proper meal. Stadium food is expensive and limited.
  • Charge your phone to 100%. You’ll need it for FAN ID, tickets, maps, and rideshare.
  • Check the FIFA app for any last-minute gate or schedule changes.

3 Hours Before Kickoff

  • Leave your hotel. Factor in traffic, especially for evening matches.
  • Head to the nearest Metro station or designated rideshare drop-off point.
  • Do NOT drive to the stadium. Parking is extremely limited and road closures will be in effect.

2-3 Hours Before Kickoff (Arrive at Stadium)

  • FIFA recommends arriving at least 2-3 hours early for World Cup matches.
  • Security perimeters begin well outside the stadium. You’ll pass through multiple checkpoints.
  • First checkpoint: ticket and FAN ID verification
  • Second checkpoint: bag check and body scan
  • Entry to your section

1 Hour Before Kickoff

  • Find your seat. Explore the stadium concourse for food, drinks, and merchandise.
  • Soak in the pre-match atmosphere — music, flag displays, team warm-ups.

During the Match

  • Stay in your designated seat. FIFA assigns specific seats (no general admission).
  • Alcohol availability varies — FIFA makes this decision per venue and is usually limited.
  • Mobile payments are accepted at most concession stands.

After the Match

  • Don’t rush. Let the initial crowd clear — it’s safer and faster to wait 15-20 minutes.
  • Follow stadium staff directions for exit routes.
  • Head to designated rideshare pickup zones — they’ll be marked with signage.
  • Metro service will be extended on match nights.

Stadium-Specific Information

Estadio Azteca (Mexico City)

  • Capacity: 87,523
  • Nearest Metro: Estadio Azteca (Line 12)
  • Altitude: 2,240m — stay hydrated, the sun hits harder at altitude
  • Tips: The Coyoacán side has easier access. South gates tend to be less crowded.

Estadio Akron (Guadalajara)

  • Capacity: 49,850
  • Nearest transit: Dedicated shuttle buses from Centro and Chapultepec
  • Tips: The stadium is in the suburbs — Uber/DiDi is your best bet. Leave early to avoid traffic on the Periférico highway.

Estadio BBVA (Monterrey)

  • Capacity: 53,500
  • Nearest transit: Designated shuttle buses from Centro and San Pedro
  • Tips: The stadium is one of the most modern in the Americas. Expect efficient entry. Bring a hat — Monterrey in June is 35°C+.

Accessibility

FIFA provides accessibility services at all World Cup venues:

  • Wheelchair-accessible seating with companion seats
  • Audio-descriptive commentary in English and Spanish
  • Accessible restrooms at all levels
  • Assistance from trained volunteers at entry points and throughout the stadium

Contact FIFA’s accessibility team through FIFA.com or the FIFA app for specific needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave the stadium and re-enter?

No. Once you exit the stadium, you cannot re-enter with the same ticket.

Is there alcohol in the stadium?

FIFA decides this per venue and tournament. Historically, beer has been available in stadium concourses but not in seating areas. Policies may change — check FIFA.com closer to the tournament.

What if my phone dies and I can’t show my FAN ID?

Print a backup copy of your FAN ID before match day. FIFA information desks outside the stadium can also assist with verification, but expect delays.

Can I bring my own food?

No. Outside food and beverages are not permitted inside the stadium.

What happens if I arrive late?

You can still enter after kickoff, but you may miss action. Entry procedures don’t speed up — you’ll still go through full security screening.
