Mexico World Cup Visa Requirements & Entry Guide
One of the best things about Mexico as a World Cup host: most visitors don’t need a visa. Mexico has one of the most generous visa-free entry policies in the world, welcoming citizens of 60+ countries for tourism without advance paperwork. But there are still important things to know — from the FMM tourist permit to the FIFA FAN ID that doubles as a travel document.
Visa-Free Entry (Most Visitors)
Citizens of the following countries can enter Mexico without a visa for up to 180 days:
Visa-Free Countries (Partial List)
- North America: United States, Canada
- European Union: All 27 member states
- UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland
- Asia-Pacific: Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong
- South America: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay
- Other: Israel, Turkey, South Africa, Russia
For the complete list, check Mexico’s National Immigration Institute (INM) website.
What You Get
- 180-day stay for tourism purposes
- FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) — tourist permit issued at the border or airport
- No advance application needed — just show up with a valid passport
What You Need at Entry
- Valid passport — must be valid for the duration of your stay (6+ months recommended)
- Return or onward ticket — immigration may ask for proof you’re leaving
- Proof of accommodation — hotel booking or address where you’re staying
- FMM form — completed online before arrival or at the immigration counter
The FMM Tourist Permit
The FMM is Mexico’s tourist entry form. As of 2024, it’s increasingly digital:
Online FMM (Recommended)
- Complete the form at INM’s website before your flight
- Receive a QR code via email
- Show the QR code at immigration on arrival
- Keep a copy — you need it when you leave Mexico
Paper FMM
- Still available at airports and border crossings
- Fill out the form, get it stamped at immigration
- Don’t lose it — there’s a fine for a lost FMM at departure (~$40 USD)
FMM Tips
- The FMM is free for stays under 7 days by air. For longer stays or land entry, there may be a fee (~$35 USD) — often included in your airfare.
- Immigration officers decide how many days to grant (up to 180). If you need the full 180, politely state your intended length of stay.
- If entering by land from the US, make sure to stop at the immigration office at the border. Some travelers accidentally skip this step.
Special Visa Provisions: FIFA FAN ID
For the 2026 World Cup, FIFA and Mexico are working on a simplified entry process for match ticket holders:
- The FIFA FAN ID may serve as a travel authorization for nationals who would normally need a visa
- This was done for Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 — visa-holding fans could enter with just their FAN ID
- Details will be confirmed by FIFA and Mexican immigration closer to the tournament
If you normally need a visa for Mexico: Register for your FIFA FAN ID as soon as you purchase tickets. Monitor FIFA.com and the Mexican consulate in your country for FAN ID visa-waiver announcements.
Countries That DO Need a Visa
If your country isn’t on the visa-free list, you’ll need a Mexican tourist visa before traveling:
How to Apply
- Contact your nearest Mexican embassy or consulate
- Required documents typically include:
- Valid passport (6+ months validity)
- Completed visa application form
- Passport photo
- Proof of economic solvency (bank statements, employment letter)
- Hotel reservations and flight itinerary
- World Cup match tickets / FIFA FAN ID (strengthens your application)
- Processing time: 2-4 weeks (apply early!)
- Fee: varies by country (~$40-50 USD)
The SAE (Electronic Authorization System)
Some nationalities can apply for a SAE electronic visa authorization online, without visiting a consulate. Check if your country qualifies at INM’s website.
Visa-Free with Another Country’s Visa
Mexico allows visa-free entry for citizens of any country if you hold a valid:
- US visa (any category)
- Canadian visa (any category)
- UK visa
- Japanese visa
- Schengen visa (any EU member state)
This is a massive shortcut. If you have any of these, you can enter Mexico without a separate Mexican visa.
Arriving by Air
What Happens at the Airport
- Immigration line — Have your passport, FMM (digital or paper), and return ticket ready
- Immigration officer stamps your passport and records your entry
- Customs — Green/red light system. Green = go through. Red = bag inspection. It’s random.
- Baggage claim — Collect your bags
- Exit to arrivals — Uber/taxi pickup areas
Tips for a Smooth Arrival
- Complete the FMM online before your flight to save time at immigration
- Have your hotel address written down (immigration may ask)
- Dress reasonably — immigration officers can deny entry if you look like you’re not a tourist
- Be patient — World Cup arrival days will have long immigration lines
- Download offline maps before you leave home — the airport Wi-Fi can be unreliable
Arriving by Land (From the US)
Thousands of fans will drive from Texas to Monterrey. Here’s the process:
At the Border
- Cross the international bridge (Laredo–Nuevo Laredo or McAllen–Reynosa recommended for Monterrey)
- Stop at the immigration office — it’s inside the border building on the Mexican side
- Get your FMM stamped — do NOT skip this step, even if no one stops you
- Vehicle permit: If driving beyond the border zone (20-30 km), you need a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP):
- Apply online at Banjercito’s website before your trip
- Cost: ~$50 USD + refundable deposit ($200-400 depending on vehicle age)
- Requires: vehicle title, registration, driver’s license, passport
- Mexican auto insurance — your US policy does NOT cover Mexico. Buy online before crossing ($15-25/day).
Recommended Border Crossings for Monterrey
- Colombia–Solidarity International Bridge (recommended) — less congested, newer facility
- Laredo–Nuevo Laredo (World Trade Bridge) — commercial bridge, also handles passenger vehicles
- McAllen–Reynosa — alternative route, slightly longer drive to Monterrey
Health & Insurance Requirements
No Mandatory Vaccinations
Mexico does not require any vaccinations for entry. However, recommended vaccinations include:
- Routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus, flu)
- Hepatitis A and B
- Typhoid (if eating extensively at street stalls)
COVID-19
As of 2026, Mexico has no COVID-related entry restrictions — no testing, no vaccination proof, no quarantine required. This could change; check before travel.
Travel Insurance
Not required for entry but strongly recommended. A policy covering medical emergencies costs $5-15 USD/day and covers:
- Emergency medical treatment
- Hospital stays
- Medical evacuation
- Trip cancellation/interruption
Departure: Don’t Forget
When leaving Mexico:
- Have your FMM (digital QR or paper form) ready — you may be asked for it at the airline check-in counter or immigration
- Lost FMM? There’s a fine (~$40 USD) payable at the airport immigration office. Budget extra time.
- If you drove in, cancel your TIP at the border — failure to do so results in forfeiting your deposit
Frequently Asked Questions
Do US citizens need a visa for Mexico?
No. US citizens can enter Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days with a valid passport.
Do I need a visa if I have a Schengen visa?
No. Holders of valid US, Canadian, UK, Japanese, or Schengen visas can enter Mexico visa-free regardless of nationality.
What if my passport expires in 4 months?
Mexico officially requires a passport valid for the duration of your stay, not 6 months. However, 6+ months validity is recommended to avoid issues with airlines.
Can I extend my stay beyond 180 days?
Yes, by visiting an INM office in Mexico before your permit expires. Extensions are not guaranteed.
Is the FIFA FAN ID a visa replacement?
